Three Important Reasons Your Pet Should Not Be Buried in Your Yard

Don’t Bury Your Pet in Your Yard

Your pet has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. It’s a very sad time for you and your family, and you are thinking about how to best honor your pet’s memory.
First, though, you must decide how to take care of your pet’s remains. Many families believe that having their pet close to them will be the best decision, and so they decide to bury the pet in their back yard. Although many people have done this, there are several problems with going this route.

Problems with Backyard Pet Burials

  1. Moving Away. The majority of people move from their adult home at least once in their life due to many factors: job relocation, a growing family, or for downsizing. If you bury your pet in your backyard or somewhere on your property, you will be leaving the pet’s remains there—with a different family who never even knew your pet or pets. That family could choose to dig up the yard to build a playground or pool and could inadvertently find your dog, cat, bird, or other animal.
  2. Rules and Regulations in Your Area. Many municipalities don’t allow pet burials on your property, so if you were to bury your pet, your local government may make you re-inter your pet’s remains elsewhere.
  3. No Monuments Can Be Installed. Monument companies don’t normally place a memorial stone in a person’s backyard, which means that you won’t be able to create a wonderful memorial to honor your pet’s life. Most pet owners like to see their memorial when they visit their pet in a permanent pet cemetery.

If you would like to have a proper burial space and memorial for your pet, Peaceful Pastures in the south of Pittsburgh can help you through the process. First, we can hold a meaningful pet viewing and funeral for this most important member of your family. Your pet can be cremated and then buried with you or your family members someday, if you wish. Or, you can have your pet buried in the Peaceful Pastures Pet Cemetery, which is next to the human cemetery at Woodruff Memorial Park. You can visit your pet any time you would like and can purchase a personal burial or mausoleum crypt at the Woodruff cemetery to be close to your pet always.
